Component 1: Human Lifespan Development
Learners will explore different aspects of growth and development and the factors that can affect this across the life stages. They will study the different events that can impact on individuals’ physical, intellectual, emotional and social development and how individuals cope with and are supported through changes caused by life events.
Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values
Learners will explore health and social care services and how they meet the needs of service users. They will also study the skills, attributes and values required when giving care.
Component 3: Health and Wellbeing
Learners will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators. They will study the importance of person-centred approaches and make recommendations to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.
Assessment Details
For components one and two, students will need to complete a controlled assessment - a series of tasks completed in exam conditions. They are able to bring their own notes into these assessments. The assessment for component one takes place in February of Year 10. Component two will be assessed in the October of Year 11. A final exam, assessing component 3, will be taken in the Summer of Year 11.
To be successful, students will need to be able to
- Apply understanding of health care to case studies.
- Be able to transform and reduce concepts in order to help build subject knowledge.
- Be exceptionally hard-working.
- Meet deadlines.
- Maintain organised notes.
Additional Equipment Recommended
- It is recommended that students purchase the course revision guide.
- Access to a laptop or Chromebook is highly recommended for accessing resources, completing assessments and for research based tasks.
What can I do to support my child at home?
- Take an interest in the topics that students are studying and discuss this with them.
- Help students to make detailed notes which will be highly beneficial during their assessments.
- Knowledge is the backbone of success in the externally assessed modules so help students to ‘learn’ content through questioning, helping them produce revision material/cards etc.
- Facilitate time for them to undertake pressure/timed practice at home so that they can develop a fluent exam technique.
- Help them to keep organised as this is the key to accessing the highest grades.

- Pearson, CGP and Tutor2U have all published revision guides and practice assessment booklets. Please ensure that guides purchased are for the BTEC Tech Award and that they have been updated to cover curriculum changes from 2022 onwards.
