French KS3 | Year 9

Subject Content

In Year 9, students will be able to talk confidently about their personal relationships, their views on marriage, how they stay in touch using social media, their feelings on music and television, food and sport, as well as learn about significant cultural aspects of everyday French life such as various celebrations in France.

The key topics are:

  • People around me
  • My life outside school
  • Celebrations

Course content is supported by the “AQA Foundation” and “Kerboodle” series of publications.


Assessment Details

Students are assessed at various end points throughout the course. Their speaking, listening, reading and writing competencies are evaluated.

Students should be able to:

  • Confidently understand spoken and written language in a range of tenses when accompanied with some familiar language
  • Give extended responses in French to questions asked in French
  • Give extended personal opinions on a range of topics, including those from Year 7 and 8
  • Be prepared to give an opinion in French on complex issues such as children’s rights 
  • Understand the concept of genders of nouns and how they affect written and spoken language
  • Produce extended passages of written work in at least two tenses from memory or with a model text
  • Display strategies which allow comprehension of challenging and unfamiliar text in French
  • Be able to comprehend and/or narrate events using three different time frames

Additional Equipment Recommended

  • A French/English dictionary (we recommend the Collins dictionaries, or any with verb tables and a glossary of key terms included)

What can I do to support my child at home?

  • Take an interest and get them to teach you what they have learned in their French lessons: 
  • Ensure they have packed their exercise book, and read through the last lesson’s vocabulary the night before
  • Encourage practice with any French-speaking friends or family
  • Put the French audio/subtitles on a favourite family film
  • Encourage and be positive about the value of learning another language – it directly improves literacy in English!
