Year 10 Work Experience Placement Deadline & Support

Important Update:

We are writing to provide an important update regarding the Year 10 Work Experience (WEX) program. To better support our students in securing valuable placements, we have extended the deadline for confirming their placements to Friday, 9th May 2025.

We understand that finding suitable placements can be a challenging process, and we are committed to assisting our students. However, it is crucial to remember that the WEX program is designed to foster independence and develop essential real-world skills. Therefore, we encourage students to take ownership of their search and actively engage with potential employers.

To ensure students are making diligent efforts, we will be monitoring their progress and requesting evidence of their job search activities. We kindly ask for your support in reinforcing the following key aspects:

Active Job Search and Direct Engagement:

  • Personal Business Visits: Encourage your child to visit local businesses in person. Face-to-face interactions often leave a stronger impression and increase the likelihood of securing a placement. Suggest exploring diverse options, such as garden centres, retail stores, and cafés, which are frequently receptive to student placements.

  • Professional Application Materials: Ensure your child has a current, well-structured CV and a tailored cover letter. Please review these documents with them and encourage them to print multiple copies for distribution.

  • Detailed Job Search Log: Request that your child maintain a comprehensive list of all businesses they have contacted, including the dates and methods of contact. This will help us assess the thoroughness of their search and identify any potential issues, such as emails being overlooked or filtered as spam.

Available Resources:

Please remind your child of the valuable resources available on our school website:

Key Reminders for Students:

  • Utilise the Easter Break: The two-week Easter break provides an excellent opportunity for students to visit local businesses, introduce themselves, and submit their CVs and cover letters.

  • Manage Career Field Expectations: While pursuing placements in their desired career field is ideal, it is important to manage expectations, especially for students under 18. Many specialised fields have age restrictions. For example, direct work experience in A&E may not be feasible.

  • Focus on Transferable Skills: The primary objective of the WEX program is to develop transferable soft skills, aligned with our 6Cs: challenge, collaboration, critical thinking, creative thinking, community, and coaching. These skills are invaluable for future success, regardless of career path.

We appreciate your ongoing support in helping our students make the most of this valuable learning experience. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours Sincerely,

Clive Matcham
