EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)

Subject Content

The EPQ is a popular qualification that allows students to investigate a topic of their choice. Students can either write a 5,000-word report or produce an artefact, such as a video, performance, or artwork. The International EPQ allows students to create a physical object in addition to a 1,000-word report.

Assessment Details

Students will be expected to apply a range of skills, including:

  • Identifying, designing, planning, and completing a project
  • Obtaining, selecting, and using information from a range of sources
  • Analysing data and applying it relevantly
  • Selecting and using a range of skills to solve problems and make decisions
  • Evaluating outcomes in relation to agreed objectives
  • Selecting and using a range of communication skills
  • Your EPQ essay is written in an academic style.  Google Scholar is suitable as it will only show you academic sources like journal articles or university-level papers which are perfect for gathering ideas for your essay to reference later.

What can I do to support my child at home?

  • Encourage Independence: While parents can offer support, it’s crucial to let the child take the lead. The EPQ is about developing independent research and critical thinking skills, so avoid being too hands-on with the actual content.
  • Discuss Topic Ideas: When they’re in the early stages of their EPQ, be a sounding board for their ideas. Ask open-ended questions to help them narrow down and refine their research question or project topic.
  • Find Resources Together: Help them find credible sources, whether online or in libraries. Parents with expertise or interest in the subject can be particularly helpful in guiding how to search for reliable academic materials.
  • Encourage Reflection: The EPQ encourages reflection on the process. Ask your child to think about what they’ve learned throughout the project, not just the final outcome. This reflection will be valuable in writing the final report and completing any reflection logs.
